Hi everyone.
Just got this bike today. Bought it cheap as it currently won’t start.
Previous owner is deceased, bought it off his brother, so have minimal info.
Story is the original keys were lost. A new ignition barrel and two new keys with the little key code bar ( Honda parts) supplied with the bike. Question is, will this work. I’m assuming I will need to still get them programmed to work together? Is that correct?
Thanks for the help.

I think it's gotta registered to the bike's brain by a dealer. I'll check the FSM and get back.

I just spent half an hour going thru the FSM and there is no mention of HISS. It's in the Owner's Manual, starting on page 51. Here's what it says:

HISS.webp

You'll need this stuff to get it going - or pay $1100 for a new ECU and key sensor plus dealer time while they figure out how to do it.

So by the looks of it. No old key = no ability to program new keys.
option 1 buy another ecu and key set
option 2 hack the ecu and wipe the key codes so it thinks it is a “virgin ecu” . I have seen this done on a car ecu but probably beyond my skill
option 3 wreck it.

Option 4 - buy the bits on ebay to get it going. Since you got it cheap another $600 will get it going to keep or sell for about $5500.

How many km on it?

17000km
Another option, can get an American ecu with no HISS.
I’ll try this new barrel and key tomorrow or the next. There is some funny stuff on this bike. The new keys open the fuel cap but not the seat release or ignition. The current keys turn the ignition and the seat release. The ignition bolts to remove the top plate were stripped. I’m not sure if they got half way through rekeying it or what.
It’s not stolen though. I checked that tonight.

It's my understanding that ALL Dinos have HISS, but Gizmo would know what's what in the USofA.

NO HISS that I know of here in The States. Had a backup (spare) key made for my bike when I got it. Key shop just cut a Honda blank key and I use this key whenever I take the Dino out into the world! (It works EVERYTHING the original key does!)

Option 5 - get the old barrel to a good locksmith. The DN's key is pretty ordinary, I've seen new keys made for Honda using the old barrel only. Blank key needed of course, locksmith may provide this too.

Edit: sorry, didn't notice the HISS issue...

There is some guy from AU selling DN used parts on ebay (user name " bike_spares_australia"). You already asked him, perhaps he has a suitable set of ECM and a key?
One of his listings, you can send him personal message: https://www.ebay.com/itm/193986880176

So.. to add to the story.
I have rung a few specialist automotive locksmiths and there is a solution. It is possible to read the data in the ECU to get the key code and program blank key chips to that. The ECU must be physically opened to access the component. There is a video of this on Youtube. Two companies in Australia, that I have found so far, one in Ireland. I will be posting the ecu off on Monday so once i get a result I'll let everyone know final costs etc.

Sorry, not yet. ECU has been posted - waiting game now...
I did speak to Ostan people about the idea of an American ECU and he was saying that they hadn't ever tried with this model - no surprise there :) - but he did say it does work for a few of the Hondas but you have to figure out the second power feed pin to the ECU (and its not always 12v, sometimes 9v) - that would mean getting a good quality USA and Europe wiring diagram and figuring it out. I was tempted as a USA ECU is about $150 but trying to find high definition wiring diagrams was a pain. I saw the ones on here and downloaded them via drop box but the quality is not high enough.
I'll hopefully get it all back in 2 weeks ??

You can try to download wiring diagrams here from my very own personal site:
US non Cali
EU (in french)

Both should be printable/readable. The EU one is high quality file, without questions I made in size of A3, hanging on my garage wall.
